'88) Chief Operating Officer at H2M architects + engineers Joseph "Joe" Mottola, AIA, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at H2M architects + engineers, is a proud New York Institute of Technology alumnus whose career reflects the values of leadership, service, and community impact. With more than 35 years of experience in architecture, design, and construction, Joe has played a pivotal role in the growth and success of H2M, helping guide the firm's technical operations, strategic initiatives, and multidisciplinary project delivery across the New York metropolitan area. Joe joined H2M in 1987 as the firm's second architect after studying architecture at New York Institute of Technology. As the architecture practice grew, he took on increasing leadership responsibilities and became instrumental in building the firm's architectural operations. His vision and experience as a longtime volunteer firefighter helped establish H2M's emergency services design practice, which has since completed and assessed hundreds of fire station projects throughout the region. Throughout his career, Joe has led with a deep commitment to improving the communities H2M serves. In addition to his executive leadership role, he continues to lend his expertise to emergency response facility design, providing guidance on site selection, design, budgeting, and public awareness. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Construction Specifications Institute. Joe's dedication to service extends well beyond his professional work. He has served as a volunteer firefighter for more than 40 years with the Seaford and Massapequa Fire Departments, bringing firsthand knowledge and compassion to the facilities he helps design. He is also actively involved with the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center, the Firefighters Charitable Foundation, and other organizations that advance fire safety, education, charitable giving, and community support. Philanthropy has been a defining part of Joe's leadership. He has championed H2M's involvement with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, the Interfaith Nutrition Network, Special Olympics New York, and Island Harvest. He has also been a passionate advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention through his support of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. His career and service reflect the values of New York Institute of Technology and the meaningful role its alumni play in strengthening their professions and communities. Jacqueline Velez, AIA, NCARB (B.S. '85) Founder and Principal at JMV Associates LLC and JMV Architect, PLLC Jacqueline Velez, AIA, NCARB, is an architect, entrepreneur, and advocate for the architectural profession with more than 40 years of experience. She is the Founder and Principal of JMV Architect, PLLC, an award-winning architectural design firm, and JMV Associates, LLC, a building code, zoning consulting, and expediting firm. Through her Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs), she has led the successful delivery of educational, residential, commercial, institutional, and religious projects throughout New York. A graduate of the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design, Jacqueline is dedicated to advancing the profession through leadership, mentorship, and service. She currently serves as Vice President of Education for the American Institute of Architects New York State (AIANYS), is a member of the NYIT School of Architecture and Design Advisory Board, and serves on the Village of Floral Park Architectural Review Board. As Immediate Past President of the AIA Queens Chapter, she made history as its first Latina President and only the second woman to hold that role. Jacqueline is committed to mentoring students and emerging professionals through partnerships with the NYC School Construction Authority, local schools, and universities. She is also a co-author of Latinas in Architecture, Volume III , sharing her journey to inspire future architects, particularly women and individuals from underrepresented communities. Her leadership has earned architectural design awards for JMV Architect, while JMV Associates has been recognized with honors including the New York State Senate Empire Award. Jacqueline has also received distinctions such as the NAWIC NY Spotlight Award for the Advancement of Women Entrepreneurs. Being recognized by her alma mater, where her professional journey began, is among the most meaningful honors of her career. Emerging Alumni Award Roberto Vila, AIA, LEED AP (M.Arch. '08) Principal, Architect at Stantec Roberto's career has been dedicated to enhancing the passenger experience through the design of train and bus stations, major transportation terminals, and airports. Early in his career, Roberto was a key member of the design team for the first Lima Metro Line in Peru. Today, Roberto is leading efforts on John F. Kennedy Airport Terminal 6, a world-class $4.2 billion terminal scheduled to open in 2026. He is also involved in the Newark Liberty Airport AirTrain Program in New Jersey, which is designed to improve public transit access and connectivity between terminals, parking facilities, and rental car centers. Based in New York City, Roberto serves as a Principal Architect for Airports and Transit and brings more than two decades of experience to the industry. Throughout his career, he has designed and managed major transportation projects, including work at New York Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, Yankee Stadium Station, and the Sports Illustrated (formerly Red Bull Arena) PATH Station in Harrison, New Jersey. He is currently designing transportation projects in Boston, Chicago, and Miami. Roberto is also a strong advocate for inclusion, diversity, and mentoring future professionals. He has been a speaker at the New York Build Expo for the past seven consecutive years and was selected as a mentor by the Board of Directors of the American Public Transportation Foundation Scholar Mentor Program in 2021. Since 2013, he has served on the Engineering and Architecture Commission of the New York City Department of Education, where he provides industry insight for Career and Technical Education programs and participates in design reviews with high school students. New York City & State Magazine recognized Roberto as one of the 100 Latino leaders in New York City and also honored him as a Trailblazer in Architecture.
